Post 1 Part 3

Our next stop of the day was what the scriptures refer to as "Bethany Beyond Jordan."  This is the area where several interesting Biblical events took place.  It is here that Elijah was taken up to heaven in a charriot of fire.  (See 2 Kings 2"11)

This is also the place where Joshua and the people of Israel crossed into the promised land across from Jericho.

Probably most significant, this is the place where John spent most of is ministry life and the most likely place where John Baptized Jesus.

The Jordan is a muddly little river at this point (just 7 km from the Dead Sea).  The likely place where John did his baptizing is little more than a muddy water hole that is no longer fed by the river as the river itself is less than one third the size of the Jordan in Jesus' day.  This is due primairly to using the river for irrigation and population water needs.

For some it was a fairly emotional place and moment.  I was intrigued, but somehow not emotional. (I know, many have considered me 'cold'!! :-) )

Then it was back to the hotel and supper!

A great day.  A hot day.  An eye opening day in the "greater Holy Land!"
