With an early start we first headed south and went to Umm ar-Rasas. This was a roman army outpost in the first century and developed into a small city. What is amazing about this little city was that there are reminants of 13 Christian churches there. The most spectatular church is Saint Stephens where the floor was found almost intact and was a wal to wall mosaic.
The whole ruin itself was amazing in its size and complexity. The idea of a whole city simply being there and then gone, under a thousand years of weeds and dust is mind-boggling.
